NEW FOREST RULE IGNORES RECREATION AND MANAGEMENT

The Forest Service is seeking public comment about developing a new direction for National Forest Land Management Planning. The new Forest Rule will determine how every National Forest nationwide will manage our lands. Right now they need your input to get the Plan back on track.

  • Recreation has been omitted from the proposed policies of the New Rule
  • Active Management to promote Forest Health has been omitted
  • Landscape Wide management of private lands by the government is included (Integral to the United Nations Wildlands Project)

The newly proposed Forest Planning Rule will apparently shift from management of your Forests to focus more on closing roads and trails or what they refer to as "restoration" and "preservation".

The new rule appears to be an attempt to shift from multiple use and public access to potential principles including "an emphasis on restoration, conservation, and the improved resilience of ecosystems; watershed health; climate change response; species diversity and wildlife habitat; sustainable National Forest System lands; proactive collaboration; and working across landscapes." Yet most of these goals to promote forest health are best accomplished through active management and fuel reduction projects which the New Rule does not include .

This Plan is just starting, so it is not a done deal. Your comments will make a difference.
